HorroVR: horror VR game

Context
HorroVR is a virtual reality survival horror game developed for the Meta Quest 2 during our software engineering studies at ENSSAT (advanced national college of applied science and technology). The objective was to design a suspenseful, tactile VR experience with physical object interaction, spatial audio, and environmental puzzles under the hardware constraints of a standalone headset.
Overview & Gameplay
Set inside an abandoned, dimly lit manor, players must navigate through interconnected rooms, solve environmental puzzles, and survive unexpected threats:
- Physics-Driven VR Mechanics: Direct hand interactions, physical drawer/door opening, item inspection, and intuitive inventory management using Quest 2 motion controllers.
- Environmental Puzzles: Logic gates, hidden keys, and mechanical interactions requiring players to observe clues embedded in the environment.
- Immersive Atmosphere: High-tension sound design with 3D spatialized audio and calculated lighting to create a compelling horror mood without disorienting the player.
Technical Implementation
- Engine & Architecture: Developed in Unreal Engine, utilizing C++ for core interaction systems, controller tracking, and state management, alongside Blueprints for puzzle event scripting.
- Standalone VR Optimization: Tuned draw calls, material complexity, and lighting to consistently hit the 72 FPS target on standalone Quest hardware, minimizing latency and motion sickness.
- Haptic & Sensory Feedback: Fine-tuned rumble feedback upon grabbing objects, interacting with puzzle mechanisms, and environmental cues.
